Welcome to our fun international women choir
Come sing with us !
We are an international group of women who love singing, friendship and fun and who rehearse each Thursday at lunchtime.
Since its formation in 2012 by the original Music Director Katrine Reimers, Barcarolle Choir has performed several concerts featuring soloists from the Royal College of Music.
Barcarolle Choir takes its name from the Barcarolle musical genre with the same name. The Barcarolle is a very well known Duet from the “Contes d’Hoffman” composed by Offenbach. This piece is our iconic piece.
Five years ago Sam Evans has taken the baton as our Musical Director.
Sam Evans has been a professional singer for 16 years, and in addition to his singing career, is now hugely in demand as a choir trainer and choral conductor. A former choral scholar at King’s College Cambridge, he studied singing as a postgraduate at the Royal Academy of Music, and spent a further two years on the opera course at the Royal College of Music. He has sung with most of the professional choirs in the U.K., including the Sixteen, the Monteverdi Choir and Polyphony. As a soloist he has appeared at the Royal Albert Hall, the Opéra Comique in Paris, and Sydney Opera House. He was a finalist in the Kathleen Ferrier Awards, and winner of the Association of English Speakers and Singers Prize. He is a much respected teacher of singing, and teaches at Westminster School, and Queen’s College Cambridge. He also teaches singing for the National Youth Choir of Great Britain, and the Eton Choral Courses.
He is currently director of several choirs, including Battersea Choral Society, Battersea Power Station Community Choir and Kingston University Chamber Choir. He is renowned for his upbeat style, infectious enthusiasm for the music, and knowledge of vocal technique.
Since Sam has joined Barcarolle Choir he has been focusing on vocal training and repertoire expansion. http://www.samevansmusic.net
Whether you are an experienced singer looking for new musical challenges, or someone who want to give singing a try for the first time, Barcarolle Choir is for you: comprising two choirs, Barcarolle offers something to all musical tastes and abilities :
* The Belters sing pop/jazz songs, a lot of fun! Focusing on pop songs, jazz standards and songs from the West End, there is no requirement to read music to join this choir. The repertoire covers very different styles of music : Amazing Grace, All my Loving (The Beattles), Mamma Mia (Abba)…
The Divas encompass a classical and contemporary repertoire. Rehearsals are fun and lively, with a focus on vocal technique and musical rehearsal. If you are a confident singer looking to develop your voice as well as learn exciting repertoire, this is the choir for you! Our repertoire covers a wide range of music and composers from Puccini to Rutter, from Mendelssohn to Whitacre, from Mozart to Fauré and many more.
The two choirs have joyful separate rehearsals but give two common concerts every year with a wide range of genres and repertoire. Barcarolle Choir does also perform during Special Occasions such as the V&A museum Christmas Carols in December.
The choir does not require any audition but our Music Director can do a voice test just to make sure you are singing in the accurate voice group. Rehearsals are joyous and friendly but it is expected from each singer to work at home with the various online or media supports provided in order for the rehearsals to be as efficient as possible.
Barcarolle Choir is not only singing and performing. We also keep our social life active by organizing other social opportunities to meet such as lunches, museums visit…. ’We do believe these occasions are as crucial as singing for the friendship and well-being of the members.
